The design of hoods and ductwork is critical to air-pollution control. Hoods are air-intake devices connected to a mechanical exhaust ventilation system for collecting and removing effluents. They primarily function to prevent the escape of contaminants into the atmosphere, while at the same time treating the air exhausted through the hood to extract contaminants. Furthermore, to minimize capital and operating costs of control equipment, no more air than necessary should be released than required for complete capture. Ductwork is the conduit that conveys exhausted air from the exhaust hood to the outside of the facility. Sizing and layout must be carefully engineered to permit the proper flow and velocity of exhaust gasses through all exit points.

Hoods are built of PVC, Polypropylene, or FRP materials. A combination of thermoplastic liner with a strong FRP exterior overlay is an excellent design, providing the corrosion resistance of the PVC and the structural integrity of fiberglass.
